GUESTS
Making Waves 19 proudly welcomes three special guests from Romania, whose presence brings added depth to our 2025 lineup. Actor Iulian Postelnicu, known for his acclaimed and most versatile performances in contemporary Romanian cinema, a key performer in The New Year That Never Came, joins us for discussions about the film’s incisive portrayal of human behavior in moments marked by fear, uncertainty, and political upheaval.
The New Year That Never Came is a symphonic project, leveraging a solid six-strand choral structure to map the fall of Ceaușescu’s dictatorship. Set on the incendiary day of December 20, 1989, the film’s power lies in a calibrated mix of absorbing drama and crushing, often dark humor.
Producer Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan joins us for documentary Bright Future, together with Andrei Gorgan, the film’s editor, whose sharp and intuitive storytelling craftsmanship designed its powerful narrative. Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan brings with her a track record of award-winning documentaries — including Acasă, My Home and A Mere Breath — known for their bold, socially conscious storytelling.
Bright Future is a critical piece of archival assemblage, drawing on raw VHS footage from the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in North Korea, 1989.
Sports journaliste Steve Flink will join us for the screening of documentary Nasty.
Nasty is an adrenaline-charged portrait of legendary tennis player Ilie Nastase and is as entertaining as a match with its protagonist. A stellar cast—including luminaries like Billie Jean King, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal, and Jimmy Connors—all acknowledge his defiant edge and controversial behavior, yet consistently vouch for his fundamental talent and kindness.
Audiences in New York will have the chance to meet them in person during screenings and Q&A sessions between December 3–7.
